Dec. 4, 2012

‘Get Fit Challenge’ registration now open!

2013 Contest will feature more winners and a bigger prize pool

One of the most popular New Year’s resolutions is to lose weight – but it’s a resolution difficult to keep because for many finding the motivation to get started can be quite challenging.

But motivation shouldn’t be an issue in 2013 thanks to The Daily Nonpareil’s newly redesigned “Get Fit Challenge,” an annual weight loss contest that will feature the largest prize pool ever – $6,000 – and more winners than ever before – 36 as compared to 12 in past years.

Contestants will once again compete as teams of four individuals.  The teams that achieve the highest percentage of total weight lost over a 10-week period will receive cash prizes. Two individuals, one male and one female, will also be awarded a cash prize for having achieved the highest percentage of personal weight loss.

Competing teams will battle to see which team can lose the largest percentage of total weight – not necessarily the most pounds. Each participating team will be weighed at the beginning of the contest and then again at the end of the 10-week program.

Contestants must weigh in at the Jan. 12 one-day health fair, which will once again be held at the Mid America Center between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.Teams must be preregistered prior to the health fair

Teams can register by completing the coupon in a given day’s newspaper and dropping it off at The Nonpareil’s offices at 535 W. Broadway in downtown Council Bluffs.

The registration fee remains $40 per team.  Each team must consist of four individuals and each team must have a team name.  Teams can consist of all male or female members, or of both male and female contestants. Contestants can be any age.

A new feature this year is the “Early Bird” registration deadline. Five teams registering on or before Monday, Dec. 17, will have their registration fee returned allowing those teams to compete for free. The five “Early Bird” winning teams will be drawn at random on Dec. 18 from among all teams meeting the “Early Bird” deadline.

As has been the case in previous contests, all individual weights will remain confidential. Only team weights will be used during the contest. The Council Bluffs YMCA will once again handle the weighing in of all contestants.

The $6,000 prize pool for the 2013 “Get Fit” contest is double the size of the 2012 pool and the number of winners will be triple the number in previous contests.

In 2013, the three teams who achieve the highest percentage of weight lost will each be awarded a $1,200 Gold Prize.  In previous years only one team was awarded the top prize.

Similarly, there will be three Silver $400 prizes awarded. The three second-tier prizes will be awarded to the teams that finish in fourth, fifth and sixth place. Again, in previous years, only one team was given a Silver prize.

Teams that finish in the seventh, eighth and ninth slots will each be awarded a Bronze $200 cash prize versus the one Bronze prize given in past contests.

With a total of nine teams being selected as winners, 36 individuals will be given cash prizes versus 12 people in previous years.

Also, in addition to the team prizes, once again in 2013 there will be cash prizes for the individual male and female who lose the highest percentage of personal weight.  The top male and female losers will each be awarded a $300 cash prize.  The individual-accomplishment prizes are offered to encourage individuals to keep losing weight regardless of how their team is performing.

However, there is a new rule regarding the individual-accomplishment part of the contest.  Contestants may not win the individual prize in consecutive years. The contestants who won the individual-accomplishment challenge in 2012 will not be eligible to receive the 2013 prize.
